At Stepping stones we aim to include therapeutic support as part of our core offer to most students.  We have a full time speech and language therapist and occupational therapists, with visiting practitioners providing physiotherapy and Sensory Integration occupational therapy.

Therapy is seen as an integral part of the curriculum, underpinning students ability to learn in a classroom based environment, and to develop independent learning skills.

The multidisciplinary team at Stepping stones work with students to enable them to develop essential life stills, make and maintain friendships, develop social understanding and functional independence necessary for their next steps.

Therapists work across both school sites and work with students on a one to one basis, in small groups and in the classroom.  Many students also have daily programmes devised by therapists and delivered by trained teaching assistants.

The therapy team is part of the wider staff team and takes part in break time and lunch time duties providing structured play and role modelling.

Each class team meet as a multidisciplinary team with therapists on a half termly basis. Therapists also contribute to IEP and annual reviews.

Communication with parents and families is seen as important and we encourage an open dialogue.

The therapy team is led by our Therapy Lead, Rachel Knight, who has over 20 years’ experience in special needs settings.

 Our Approach

All students receiving therapy have a provision map which outlines their therapy interventions.

Every student also has an engagement plan to support and encourage their learning, development and behaviour.

The therapists work closely with a local Educational Psychologist as well as teacher advisors for hearing, visual impairment and physical disability.

At the Lower School many of the therapeutic inputs are built into the classroom environment, there is a dedicated space for 1:1 sessions and a space for small group work. Group sessions also take place in the school hall.

At the Upper School the therapy team have a dedicated space for:

  • Speech & language
  • Occupational therapy life skills
  • Sensory Integration
  • Physiotherapy
  • Hydrotherapy pool
  • Emotional therapies
