Stepping Stones School prides itself as being a part of the local Hindhead and Haslemere community.  We lease two wonderful Grade II listed properties as sites for our school in the centre of Hindhead.  As well as acting as custodians of local heritage we work both locally and nationally in representing the needs, rights and aspirations of special needs students and their education.

Tower Road

Our Tower Road site, built in 1896, was the site of the local United Reform Church until 2003 when it was bought by Larry Sullivan and Sandy Seagrove as the site of a new school: Stepping Stones.  Opened in 2004 the school has grown rapidly and hosts students from Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex.  The Tower Road site, today home to our Lower School, has hosted national and local disability groups including Camp Magic and Suzy Songtime.

Renovated by the DFN Foundation and opened as a second site for Stepping Stones in 2016, Undershaw was built by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1896.  The building has an enormous literary heritage as the birthplace of some of the greatest Sherlock Holmes mysteries including the Hound of the Baskervilles published in 1902.  Today Undershaw is the home to our Upper School and Post 16 provision and provides the latest educational and therapy facilities to the school.  We currently host a local toddlers swim school, Fun Flippers, who also offer disability swim sessions as well as hosting local groups. The school regularly runs Heritage Open Days for the public and looks forwards to welcoming you to the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle soon.

The Cookie Bar

The school also has close links to the Cookie Bar in Hindhead, a social enterprise, which raises awareness and funds not only for the school but international projects as part of the COINS Foundation. Click below to view a short video taken at the Cookie Bar:

Work Experience at the Cookie Bar

The Cookie Bar provides us with a great opportunity for the students to have their first glimpse at the world of work within a fun and familiar environment.  The children get involved in all aspects of running a business from preparing lunches, making cookies, serving customers using the till and the importance of stock rotation.

The experience we hope lights a fire of aspiration and is a step in their journey to become self-confident, independent learners for life.
